Dubai: The official Twitter account of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya said on Wednesday that at least 73 migrants were reported missing and dead after a shipwreck off the coast of Libya on Tuesday.
The IOM said seven survivors made it to shore by boat, carrying about 80 people, which had reportedly left for Europe from Qasr Alkayar, east of Tripoli.
The IOM added that so far 11 bodies had been recovered by the Libyan Red Crescent and local police, while seven people remained in the hospital.
Libya has become a major launching point for migrants wanting to reach Europe via a perilous route across the desert and the Mediterranean Sea.
